On Tuesday the 21st of February, TY Students participated in a SFI ‘Current Chemistry Investigators’ workshop. Students carried out experiments on the Chemistry of Batteries. Three PhD students from Trinity College Dublin spoke with the students.

In the workshop, the students were challenged to put their analytical skills and knowledge of electrochemistry to the test to solve a crime. For this, they prepared standard solutions, measured the conductivity and used the data collected to plot calibration curves. Using their results, the battery had been tempered with was determined. The workshop introduced students to new equipment and experiments that was of great benefit in helping them decide if Leaving Certificate Chemistry was of interest to them. Finally, our students got to hear the researchers’ own experiences, and this gave them a greater understanding of the role of Chemistry in medicine design and water treatment. Thank you to Current Chemistry Investigators and Science Foundation Ireland for a very informative morning of chemistry.
