Moate CS 4-12

Loreto Wexford 3-7

It was an entertaining game from start to finish in Ballylinan on October 6th as Moate CS took home a well-deserved win in their first game of the senior A championship. The girls in navy and pink are defending Leinster A champions and All Ireland finalists.

Moate was off to a great start with Hannah Doolan winning the throw in. Saoirse Mc Guinness got Moate off to a great start with a lovely point previously won by Rebecca Finlay and a great run off the shoulder by Eva Donlon. Joint captains Chloe Moran and Saoirse Mcguinness showed great leadership skills on and off the pitch. Two Loreto Wexford players receive yellow cards leaving them with only 13 players for 10 minutes. Corner forwards Amy Lehane and Sile Kearney add a point each to the scoreboard. Saoirse Mc Guinness added two more points to the scoreboard.

Excellent performances from the halfback line Eva Donlon, Chloe Moran and Joyce Conway as they worked hard to get the ball up the pitch. At halftime, the two sides were equal, 0-8 Moate to 2-2 Loreto Wexford. After an inspiring talk at half time by Ms Quinn and Ms Doyle, Moate came out all guns blazing in the second half. The outstanding mid-field duo Hannah Doolan and Saoirse McGuinness won the throw up again. Eva Fox, Saoirse Mc Guinness and Sile Kearney shook the Wexford defence as they each rattled the net and Eva Fox also scoring a penalty won by Aoife Collins. The persistent scoring was continued by fellow teammates, Kaytlin Flynn and Chloe Moran who added a point each to the scoreboard. There were excellent performances from the fullback line Rebecca Finlay, Ella Corcoran and Rebecca Monaghan as they swept up the ball and tightly marked the Loreto Wexford’s attackers. Final score was 4-12 Moate to 3-7 Loreto Wexford.

This result and great team performance left Moate well-positioned for their next round of the championship against old rivals Scoil Chriost Ri, Portlaoise.
