On Thursday 25th of April, TY Students took part in the SFI ‘Current Chemistry Investigators’ workshop. Students carried out experiments on the Chemistry of Batteries under the guidance of three PhD students from Trinity College Dublin.
In the workshop, the students were challenged to use their analytical skills and knowledge of electrochemistry to identify the culprit behind a battery fire. For this, they prepared standard solutions, measured the conductivity and used the data collected to plot calibration curves. The workshop introduced students to new equipment and experiments and will be of great benefit to those studying Leaving Certificate Chemistry next year. Finally, they got the opportunity to learn about college life from the researchers themselves.
