Transition Years in Moate Community school had a very interesting morning listening to a talk on local place names by Dr Aengus Ó Fionnagáin, a native of Glasson, who is a lecturer in Irish at the University of Limerick. The talk was entitled ‘Place names in and around Moate’. The lecture featured a general introduction to the study of Irish place names, some comments on the shift from Irish to English in the 19th and early 20th centuries and the work of the Ordnance Survey (1825-1842), followed by a discussion of a selection of townland names, field names and other feature names in the Moate area. It was a most interesting and informative hour.
