On Thursday October 19th 32 senior students accompanied by Mr. Fintan Walsh attended the Apprenticeship Expo hosted by LWETB at the Mullingar Park Hotel. Representatives from all apprenticeships sectors were on hand to advise students. The event was a great opportunity for them to meet prospective employers in areas of interest to them such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry and motor mechanics.

The Expo also opened the students’ eyes to other economic sectors seeking apprentices such as Culinary Arts and Hospitality. At MCS we are big advocates of students exploring all career pathways open to them. The ‘earn as you learn’ model of training suits some best and as we know our economy is crying out for skilled people in many sectors. In fact the construction sector recently publicly bemoaned the shortage of suitably qualified people in their quest to keep up with demand for housing throughout the country.

Events such as this gives students a great opportunity to explore future options, to consider the entry requirements needed, to research the education and training, to explore progression routes and employment opportunities for the future. Feedback from students after the event was very positive, we look forward to the next one.
