Transition Years visit IMR lab Mullingar

On Thursday 5th March, the TY 3D design class from Moate CS went to Irish Manufacturing Research laboratory in Mullingar as part of Engineers week. Students learned about sustainability, linear and circular economy. They were put into groups and given a task to come up with more sustainable ways to create mobile phones, cars and jeans. They also were given chocolate bars that were produced sustainably!

Next they began the tour, this involved experiencing virtual reality, programing robots and computer games teaching us about artificial intelligence. Students were then shown many of their different 3D printers varying in different sizes that print in different materials. They were shown pieces that were printed from each printer and the materials they were made out of. Overall the TY students had an excellent time and the experience was eye-opening to the many careers there are in robotics, design and engineering, and computer science.
