Science week was delayed this year due to November Assessments and thus took place at the end of the month. The aim of Science week is to promote the study of science and encourage an appreciation of science in our everyday lives. A number of exciting events were held to explore this important field of study in MCS.

TY students’ demos with First Years

Transition Year Students entertained First Year Science students to demonstrate some interesting science concepts. These included Colourful Walking Water Rainbow, Pepper and Soap Experiment, as well as the Elephant Toothpaste experiment.

There was a high-level of enthusiastic appreciation from the First Year audience, indicating science is a living reality in MCS. Well done especially to TY students Abigayle Kane-Gannon, and Julie Moran for their work in preparation and presentation of this activity.

Science Quizzes

The first round of the Second Year Science Quizzes took place during their Science classes. The winning teams from each class then competed in Final during lunchtime, Thursday 30th Nov. Questions tested their knowledge of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, as well as some stimulating questions on general Science Facts. Team scores were very close, the winning team of Kerry Sun, Isaac Downes and Aditya Barua, receiving canteen vouchers.

Irish Science Teachers Association Senior Cycle Science Quiz

On the 16th of November, nine 6th year students from MCS represented the school at the Regional Final of the ISTA Senior Cycle Science Quiz at the TUS (Technological University of the Shannon). The students worked together to answer questions across all areas of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Agricultural Science. In addition, they faced questions on recent scientific discoveries. All teams were great ambassadors for the school and gained an understanding of how the various scientific fields interlink. Well done to the students Kian Egan, Grace O’Flaherty, Adam Keane, Michal Heba, Eimear Keenan, Abbie Coolohan, Dara Shortall, Alexandra Roche and Camilla Boschetti.

First Year Poster Competition
