Sensory Garden, a Work in Progress with Moate TY Students

The Sensory Garden at Dún Na Sí Amenity Park continues to be a ‘Work in Progress’ with the Moate Community School Transition Year students, as they help out with maintenance and develop a new feature in the garden. During favourable weather, the students walk up to the garden, where they meet with Olive Quin from the committee of the Amenity Park. They spend time weeding, pruning and planting. They have extended the Wildflower Area which last years’ TY students started and is a great attraction for a variety of butterflies and bees.

The students are working on some stimulating designs for a Meandering Sensory Path. The designs will engage the senses of sight and touch, as well as developing motor skills, hand-eye coordination and a source of mindfulness.

They have linked up with St Hilda’s Services, Moate over Zoom, to arrange some activities with their service users.

The students currently involved in the Sensory Garden project are Seán Donnelly, Conor Duffy, Shaun Kerrigan, Aisling Murphy, Darragh Nally and Chenai-Ashley Ward. The group are working with Ms Emer Gaffey and some of the students in the Uisneach Center, as part of their Working in the Community programme. All these activities are co-ordinated by Ms Margaret Mandal.
