{"id":3761,"date":"2020-01-17T13:59:47","date_gmt":"2020-01-17T13:59:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moatecs.com\/?p=3761"},"modified":"2020-01-17T13:59:47","modified_gmt":"2020-01-17T13:59:47","slug":"moate-students-compete-at-the-56th-bt-young-scientist-and-technology-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/moatecs.com\/moate-students-compete-at-the-56th-bt-young-scientist-and-technology-exhibition\/","title":{"rendered":"Moate Students compete at the 56th BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Moate Students compete at the 56<sup>th<\/sup> BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Five groups of Transition Year students from Moate Community School presented their projects at the 56<sup>th<\/sup> BT Young Scientist and Technology exhibition between the 8<sup>th<\/sup> and 11<sup>th<\/sup> of January.<\/p>\n<p>In their project titled <em>\u2018Does Seaweed contain the Solution to Ireland\u2019s Fertiliser Run-off Problem?\u2019<\/em>,\u00a0 Hannah Malone and Emma Keenan produced a variety of seaweed-based fertilisers and studied their ability to support plant growth and inhibit nutrient run-off from Irish farms.<\/p>\n<p>Aoife Murray and Megan Clinton investigated <em>\u2018Can Biochars Derived from Farm Waste Reduce Greenhouse Emissions from Irish soils?\u2019.<\/em> The group prepared biochar from hay and silage and studied the levels of greenhouse gases such as nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide produced by the soils.<\/p>\n<p>Rachael McCann and Niamh Collins\u2019 project <em>\u2018<\/em><em>Sitka vs Native Broadleaf: The impact of Ireland\u2019s forestry\u2019<\/em> compared the biodiversity of plants and invertebrates in Sitka spruce plantations and native broadleaf forests.<\/p>\n<p>Sharon Seery and Emily Ray studied the effectiveness of a variety of factors at improving the unpalatable smell of goat\u2019s milk in their project <em>\u2018Dispel the Smell of Goat\u2019s Milk\u2019<\/em>. They also investigated the ability of a number of yogurt additives at improving the taste of goat yogurt.<\/p>\n<p>Cliona McCormack and Emily Korzeniewski investigated the <em>\u2018Effects of Dredging on the River Shannon\u2019<\/em>. The group studied the impact of dredging on the river\u2019s biological, chemical and physical properties over a nine week period at sites surrounding the Meelick Weir. Cliona and Emily were \u2018Highly Commended\u2019 by the judges for their investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The judges were impressed with the enthusiasm and confidence of all students during their presentations. They commended all groups on their thorough investigations and fluent knowledge of a range of environmental issues.
