Moate students compete at Salters’ Festival of Chemistry

On the 18th of May, four first year students from Moate Community School travelled to Trinity College Dublin to compete in the prestigious 2019 Salters’ Festival of Chemistry. The group were one of twenty schools taking part in the event.

This year’s event focused on the International Year of the Periodic Table. Eimear Keenan, Eoin Murphy, Dara Shortall and Katie Molloy carried out a number of investigations and problem solving activities to identify an ‘Element Thief’. Their creativity was then tested in the TCD University challenge where they were tasked with preparing different colour solutions.

Finally, the students were treated to a chemistry magic show which used magic tricks to explain general properties of elements. The students represented their school with pride. They demonstrated a variety of investigate skills which will be of great benefit to them as they continue their studies in Junior Cycle Science.
