Moate Community School Graduate receives Excellence Scholarship at NUIG

Moate CS is very proud of former student Alan Henson from Castledaly who was one of 72 students from around the country to be presented with an Excellence Scholarship at a special ceremony on Thursday evening last October 11, 2018 at NUIG. This accolade recognises students who are the top 20% of high achievers entering third level.  Alan is now studying Financial Maths and Economics and was one of six students awarded in this category. Alan was accompanied to the event by his parents John and Margaret, brother Paul and his girlfriend Dervla and his School Guidance Counsellor Josephine Meehan.

The awards have grown since 2017 when there were only 56 recipients. This year’s total of 72 Excellence Scholarships attests to the high standards of achievement among students entering first year at NUIG this year. In fact the awards were spread among 17 of 32 counties with students coming from as far away as Counties Cork, Kerry and Down and 3 recipients hail from Co. Westmeath.

Awards were presented by the university’s Registrar and Deputy President Professor Pól Ó Dochartaigh who spoke to guests through the medium of Irish and English.  His approachability and availability to take pictures and speak with family and friends of the awardees after the ceremony was much appreciated. Students and guests finished off the evening with a lovely reception where students and their guests had an opportunity to mingle.
