Moate CS TY students host NCBI service users in the Sensory Garden

A group of TY students from Moate CS hosted service users from NCBI(National Council for the Blind Ireland) in the Sensory Garden at Dún Na Sí Amenity and Heritage Park recently. The students enlightened them with the plants and features in the garden to particularly stimulate individuals with impaired senses. The users talked about their impaired vision and gave feedback Garden.

They were particularly stimulated by the plants with strong smells such as, chives, citrus, lavender and wallflowers. The purple and yellow primroses were most striking. They found the wind chimes and the developing Water Feature would be good locators around the garden for people who are completely blind.

The ladies from NCBI were delighted with their visit and praised the work the students have done over the last few years. They plan to arrange further visits to the Garden in the near future.

This group of students have been working since September with service users from St Hilda’s (Moate) to further develop the Sensory Garden, including the Butterfly Garden, Water Feature, and sense specific planters. They have been creating awareness of the Garden, encouraging everyone to visit especially those with impaired senses and enjoy this special space in our local community.
