Moate CS students shine at School Analyst Competition

Three 5th year Chemistry students from Moate Community School took part in Galway regional final of the School Analyst Competition which is organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Elaine Pidgeon, Aaron Keane and Julian Wisniewski used a number of analytical techniques including titrations, High Performance Liquid Chromatography and UV analysis to study the vitamin content in a number of solutions. The students then had to complete complex calculations to determine the concentration of each solution. The experiments were based on recent findings that vitamin supplements can help prevent health problems arising from atmospheric pollution.

The group impressed the judges with their team work and problem solving approach. They were awarded 2nd Place for their work. The students gained valuable experience of techniques which are regularly used in industry.
