Marie Keating Foundation Visits Senior Students in Moate CS

Over a period of 2 days a nurse representative from The Marie Keating Foundation Ms. Marie Dempsey visited a selection of Moate Community School’s TY, 5th and 6th year pupils’ to educate them on the area of Cancer Awareness.

The one hour workshops consisted of educating the students in the areas of skin, lung, breast, cervical and testicular cancers. Nurse Dempsey brought a number of props including the infamous tar jar which mimics the level of tar that lodges in the lung as a result of smoking, as well as a sugar chart informing students of the high levels of sugar in popularly consumed foods leading to obesity. Ms. Dempsey showed the pupils a video warning of the dangers of sun exposure to the skin and students asked questions at the end of the workshop relating to signs, symptoms and treatment of cancer.

MCS would like to sincerely thank Nurse Marie Dempsey and the Marie Keating Foundation for giving so freely of their time to inform our school body about such a crucial issue.
