Physical Education Department: Physical Education provides a holistic approach to the concept of physical activity at both Junior Cycle and SeniorCycle.

Physical Education Personnel : The department has a staff of two full-time teachers who bring enthusiasm, knowledge and experience to their subject area. Both teachers graduated from University of Limerick with an Honours degree. The department has a subject co-ordinator. Regular meetings take place, ensuring best and up to date practices are in place within the P.E department. As a result the numbers participating is steadily increasing with near maximum involvement.

Junior Cycle Physical Education:

The course aims

 

  • To educate the pupils about the variety of health improving beneficial activities offered by a physical Education profile.

 

  • To encourage pupils to partake in physical activity and create a clear relationship between physical activity and their health.

 

  • To develop a lifelong interest in physical activity and promote a physically active lifestyle.

 

  • To provide a variety of different sports and activities such as invasion games, net games, athletics, dance, gymnastics and health related activity in order to stimulate all students interests:

 

Senior Cycle Physical Education:

The course aims to

 

  • To develop a lifelong interest in physical activity and promote a physically active lifestyle.

 

  • To further develop students knowledge base of

=> Rules of the games

=> Skills (practices involved in becoming competent in a game)

=> Components of physical and health related fitness- Nutrition, speed, agility, strength

  • To promote positive attitudes towards participation in physical activity and to enable students to take responsibility for the organisation and development of their learning within the framework provided

Physical Education Facilities:

The Physical Education facilities in the school are excellent. The school has a top class sports gymnasium with courts marked out for basketball, badminton, volleyball, tennis and netball.

There is a multi purpose weights machine as well as 10 hydraulic weight machines that can safely be used by junior and senior cycle pupils. There are two tarmac courts with markings for tennis, soccer and basketball. The school also has a soccer pitch; two G.A.A pitches and are currently in the process of building a prunty pitch. When both teachers are timetabled back to back the community centre gymnasium across the road is available. The schools sports equipment is of the highest quality.

Physical Education Department Activities: The Physical Education department aims to promote maximum participation in all sports both in terms of in class during school and through extra curricular activities after school and during lunchtime.The department liases closely with the games committee who organise activities at lunch time such as soccer and dodge ball tournaments, tug of war, etc. The department also provide top class first aid support for the school should they be needed. After school sports are a very important aspect of the school with an extensive range of sports being catered for including G.A.A Football, Hurling, Soccer, Tennis, Badminton, Athletics, Camogie, Golf, etc. The Department will run a sports week in September to stimulate interest in and raise the profile of sport and physical activity in the school.
